Aral Sea under UN control

Until 2030, the Aral Sea will be under UN control. Desertification of the sea has led to an environmental disaster, which has had a negative impact on people in the region. In this context, a number of activities are being carried out as part of the Eco-Damu Program. Thus, saxaul seedlings are planted at the bottom of the Aral Sea and several large eco-projects are being implemented simultaneously. This was announced by Aidai Kurmanova, Head of UN Environment Programme Sub-Regional Office for Central Asia. In addition, this year, 275 million tenge (US$642,523) will be allocated for rural residents to preserve biodiversity. The funding is intended to support local people in developing environmental businesses, including eco-tourism, fish farming and forestry.
