Drones to protect Altyn-Emel National Park

It will now be possible to observe the Altyn Emel National Park from the air. Specialists of the OSCE Programme Office in Nur-Sultan presented a drone to the inspectors of the reserve. The quadcopter, equipped with a powerful video camera, can hover at an altitude of more than 500 meters within an hour. In addition, the built-in thermal imager makes it possible to record video at night.

“Drones are an effective early-stage fire detection method. And the final reason why drones can be used by national parks is to be able to observe animals, to know how many roe deer or goitered gazelles there are, and to make adjustments to the actions,” said Rati Japaridze, Economic and Environmental Officer, OSCE Programme Office in Nur-Sultan.

“It’s a good device, in particular in dealing with intruders. Using the exact GPS coordinates, the drone can show, for example, the number of a car that is within eight kilometers. In addition, the drone will show the location of the person and what he looks like. I mean, we can be eight kilometers away, but still see everything that is happening there,” said Adai Omarkhan, inspector, State National Natural Park ‘Altyn-Emel’.
