Kazakhstan takes part in UN Conference on Disarmament

Deputy Prime Minister, Kazakh Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi spoke about the commitment of Kazakhstan to achieve a nuclear-free world at the UN Conference on Disarmament in Geneva. He also noted that Kazakhstan actively participates in the implementation of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which does not substitutes, but supplements the current document on non-proliferation. The head of the Foreign Ministry stressed that the Universal Declaration on the Achievement of a Nuclear-Weapon-Free World was adopted by the UN General Assembly in December 2021 with a record number of votes.

“This year, we received more votes than in previous years during the adoption of the Nuclear-Weapons-Free World Declaration. As you know, this initiative of Kazakhstan was supported by important states acting in the field of nuclear disarmament, and the main thing here is an appeal to nuclear states and countries seeking to pursuit such weapons to renounce rearming,” said Deputy PM, Kazakh Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi.

The head of the Kazakh foreign office also spoke about the further implementation of the initiative of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to create an international agency for biological safety. Mukhtar Tleuberdi discussed the prospects for further cooperation at the meetings with the heads of major international organizations. For example, he spoke with Tatiana Valovaya, Director General of the UN Office in Geneva, about the regional projects at the UN Center in Almaty for the countries of Central Asia and Afghanistan and further collaboration.

“We see that Kazakhstan has mobilized and is moving towards socio-economic development now, making decisions, responding to existing challenges. I sincerely wish the people of Kazakhstan successful economic, social and political development. We are now celebrating 30 years since Kazakhstan has joined the United Nations. This is a very important date, because Kazakhstan has become a very authoritative member of the international community, the United Nations over these years. We interact very closely in many tracks, including in difficult times, and I would like to wish our cooperation to be actively pursued,” Tatiana Valovaya noted.

The parties discussed the process of preparation for the 12th Ministerial Conference with the WTO Director General. It will take place in Geneva on June 13 under the chairmanship of Kazakhstan. Besides, the speakers held talks on the successful implementation of joint projects and outlined plans for the future with the Secretary-General of the UN Conference on Trade and Development Rebeca Grynspan.

“As you know, we have successfully implemented UNCTAD projects in Kazakhstan, such as ASYCUDA on customs clearance of goods, as well as a project to create a single window for the export and import of Kazakh-made goods to foreign markets. Now we are actively working with the UNCTAD Secretariat. Since the Foreign Office is responsible for attracting foreign direct investment into our economy, we are discussing the implementation of a joint project to develop a unified mechanism for the access of foreign investors to our economy,” Mukhtar Tleuberdi reported.

During the bilateral meeting, President of the World Economic Forum Borge Brende extended an official invitation to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to take part in the annual meeting of the Davos summit. It will be held in the third decade of May.
