RES power in Kazakhstan increases tenfold over past five years

Over the past five years, Kazakhstan has seen tenfold increase in the capacity of wind and solar stations. The country has over 140 facilities producing energy from alternative sources. There are 43 wind, 53 solar, 40 hydro and five bioelectric power plants so far. It is planned to increase the number of plants in the nearest future.

“Until 2025, we are planning to commission 49 renewable energy facilities with a capacity of 860 MW. We mainly build wind, solar and hydroelectric power plants, which will create additional jobs, generate green eco-friendly electricity, as well as attract investments to the regions where construction of facilities is planned,” Daulet Zakaryanov, head of the Department of Realization and Monitoring of RES facilities at the Kazakh Energy Ministry, said.

Experts say that by 2030 the share of renewable energy sources in the country’s total energy balance should reach 15 percent. Now, the rate amounts to 4 percent. And by 2060, Kazakhstan intends to achieve carbon neutrality.
