Kazakhstan plans to develop a concept of law-carbon development. It will focus on reducing harmful environmental impacts and greenhouse gas emissions, Kazakh Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources Magzum Mirzagaliyev announced at a press briefing. The strategy will address the opportunities and benefits of replacing or reducing the use of coal and gas under various scenarios of economic and energy development. The development of renewable and alternative energy sources will be a key aspect of the transition to low-carbon development in the country.

“Currently, the entire world economy is being decarbonized. For this purpose, the European Union is imposing a border carbon tax on imported products from high-emission countries. This means that we need to reduce emissions in order our domestic products remain competitive in European markets. In this regard, the ministry has started to develop the concept of low-carbon development of Kazakhstan by 2050. We plan to complete the work on development of the concept in the middle of this year,” said Magzum Mirzagaliyev, Kazakh Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources.
