Closing of the Semipalatinsk nuclear test site
1990 in Kazakhstan was the time when the country got rid of ‘nuclear monster’. On the 22nd of May, the Supreme Council of the Kazakh SSR adopts a Decision to close Semipalatinsk test site. A very important moment is captured in this seemingly inconspicuous photograph. The gates leading to the test site are being closed forever. Thus, 1990 was the first year when Kazakh land hasn’t experienced a single nuclear test.
