Craftsperson from Turkistan creates masterpieces from wood

A master from Turkistan creates unique wooden items in ethnic style. The works of Gaukharbek Kunkozhayev are distinguished not only by the beauty of their forms, but also by their deep meaning. The sculptor spent three years to convey subtext of this masterpiece called “Mother Earth” to its entirety.

“At the heart of the sculpture is the image of a mother. And these are the offspring that carry her to Mecca. At the very bottom is paradise, which, as they say, is under the feet of mothers,” explained a master.

The master devotes all his free time to the craft. There is a demand for the unique items, says Kunkozhayev. After all, each of these wooden expositions is an exclusive work.

“Working with art is not easy. On the one hand, this is something you love and wish to do, on the other, you have to feed your family. But after I started making money with art, I completely devoted myself to the craft,” said Gaukharbek Kunkozhayev, a craftsperson.

The master passed on the love for the applied arts to his sons. The eldest of them also chose a path of creativity.

“Mainly, I make these kinds of items. They do not take much time, and the demand for them is high,” said Yntymak Bayanbai, a craftsperson.

Moreover, the family of Kunkozhayevs published their own book. It includes all their major works. In addition to photographs, the book includes rhymed descriptions of each sculpture. The master wrote the verses himself.
