First nuclear power plant to appear in Kazakhstan in 2035

In 2035, Kazakhstan will have a shortage of electricity of 40 percent. The domestic energy system will lose more than eight gigawatts due to the decommissioning of worn-out equipment. Experts said that more than half of the equipment had already gone out of service in 2020. Therefore, the construction of the nuclear power plant is one of the main ways to solve the problem of electricity shortages, experts of the industry believe.

“Of these six technologies, we now have to select one specific technology to continue the feasibility study. We’re still stuck at the first stage, as there are certain obligations depending on the location of the station, the actual station. The engineering and research on the specific design of the station is also underway. For this, we need to select the final supplier and technology now,” said Timur Zhantikin, Director General of the Kazakhstan Nuclear Power Plants.
