A center of composer heritage is planned to be opened at the Abai Kazakh State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet in Almaty. The project is expected to digitize more than 260 scores, which are the works of famous Kazakh composers from opera and ballet performances presented on the country’s stages since 1934. Director of Abai Kazakh State Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet, Aya Kaliyeva, spoke about the theatre’s nearest plans. As part of restoration program of iconic plays and Golden Fund of Theatre Archive, ballet “Spartacus” by Aram Khachaturian is planned to be restored as well. The theatre has not performed this ballet for more than ten years. It will premiere in June. The theatre also waits for the assignment of rights to use music part of children’s opera “The Story of Kai and Gerda” by contemporary composer Sergei Banevich. The new performance of opera “The Queen of Spades” by Pyotr Tchaikovsky is also planned. This year, a performance “Yenlik Kebek” will be played as part of the 115th anniversary of Akhmet Zhubanov.

“If the country imposes quarantine restrictions, we will have to carry out some projects online and make recordings. To date, the main thing for us is that the city’s sanitary doctor would allow us to switch to the regular mode, at least a rehearsal one, so that we can assemble teams, because full-fledged rehearsals are needed for the full creation of a product. If the plans will be changed anyway, unfortunately, all our three premieres will be postponed to the second half of the season like last year. Everything will depend, of course, on the sanitary and epidemiological situation in the city of Almaty and Kazakhstan as a whole,” said the director.
