Mangystau region focuses on green growth

Mangystau region focuses on formation of a comprehensive program for sustainable development. It will contribute to the promotion of green initiatives, solve environmental issues, including air pollution, waste management and rational use of water resources. It will also give impetus to development of the best available technologies and other eco-projects in the region. This was announced by Arman Kashkinbekov, Head of the UNDP Sustainable Development Unit in Kazakhstan. According to him, Mangystau has all the necessary resources to increase the share of renewable energy sources. The climate conditions of the region are favorable for the construction of solar and wind power plants. In general, there are about 300 days of sunlight in a year in the region, while the wind speed reaches almost nine meters per second. These are the best indicators in the country.

This region was one of the first to implement the first green projects. There are several wind turbines, which effectively generate electricity. Secondly, our partners have built a two MW solar power plant a few years ago here. The region’s solar energy potential is large. It has huge wind resources, since the wind blows constantly here because of the sea, and, accordingly, this is an inexhaustible potential as well, said Arman Kashkinbekov, head for sustainable development at UNDP.

Two new green power plants will start operating in the region soon, involving one using the wind energy, another using the sun.
