The sugar crisis, which began 4 months ago, still causes panic buying in the country. According to Fakhriddin Karatayev, a member of Mazhilis, this issue requires an urgent solution. He reports that sugar has risen in price by 61 percent over the last year, its price per kilogram varies up to 900 tenge, and this product is not available in all areas. The country’s demand for sugar is on average 600,000 tonnes, only 10 percent of which is produced in Kazakhstan, the MP stressed. The country's quota for duty-free imports of white sugar amounts to 350,000 tonnes.

“It is appropriate to extend the terms of sugar supplies for entrepreneurs up to 5-6 months and increase tariff preferences in accordance with the annual demand for sugar up to 550,000-600,000 tonnes,” Karatayev said.
